It's been a while since I've had the opportunity to sit down to write. Between interviews, securing AND starting a new job across several state lines, finding housing (twice), relocating, settling my twins into their first year of college and signing a publishing deal for my book, it goes without saying that I've had a lot on my plate these past few months. Fortunately, I can finally say that things have settled down and I'm beyond happy to have so much on my plate right now for which to be thankful.
All these changes have certainly taken a toll on my reading life as well. There are so many books saved to my favorite list, I wonder if I'll do anything other than read this summer! As I slowly get myself back into the reading groove, I wanted to mention two wonderful #middlegradebooks that I've just finished, "Saving Winslow" by @ciaobellacreech and "Ban This Book" by @AlanGratz . Any middle grade/upper elementary #teacher looking for great books to share with students, grab these two ASAP. I shared both books with my 6th graders during a recent First Chapter Friday and wished I had more copies of both to hand out.
For one of our read alouds, my students and I just finished reading the classic, "Touching Spirit Bear" by Ben Mikaelsen. What great lessons on theme! I'm really hoping my students take the messages we've discussed throughout this book and apply them to their own lives when they can only taste that one bad ingredient in their 'cake'. During #FirstChapterFriday the librarian and I checked out 20 copies of his sequel, "Ghost of Spirit Bear"!! This says so much about the way kids connect to a great book when they are actually mad that the library runs out of copies for them to borrow! This bibliophile's heart is full!!!
